The rubber bristles are not needed, but the bristles should slant instead of straight down.

I've built one and it works GREAT! It's amazing how fast it goes. My bristles are straight so I have to keep them bent. I also have to solder some wires onto my pager motor. Right now I have the battery just standing vertical between the motor contacts and it throughs the bot off balance.

My mom thought that if it was bigger and more powerful, it could clean the bottom of a shower or tub. That sounds like it might work.
